LIBT @ Brunel University – An introduction

Introduction to LIBT

LIBT was established in July 2003 as the elite International College for the University to provide access to post secondary education for International students who in the right circumstances, have the capability and motivation to complete a Brunel undergraduate degree or Masters programme - or indeed a programme at an alternative UK university.

LIBT is based on the main campus of Brunel University in Uxbridge, West London.  All LIBT students have full access to all the University’s facilities and LIBT is able to guarantee on or off campus accommodation for all its students through the University’s accommodation service.

LIBT is fully committed to ensuring that all students have the opportunity to maximise their full study potential and to achieve the best possible outcomes. LIBT staff have considerable experience in international education and provide a supportive environment which allows students to reach their full potential. LIBT is fully accredited the British Accreditation Council and the UK government inspectorates for Higher Education though the University’s quality assurance procedures.

Who should apply to LIBT?

LIBT’s alternative pathway to Brunel University is designed for International students who:

  • have not achieved the entrance score they were expecting for direct entry into the University (one of the most applied for in the UK and with ‘highly competitive’ entry standards) but want a fast track lower cost programme of studies leading to a BSc or MSc degree award
  • want a course that is equivalent and has the same syllabus to the first year of a university bachelor’s degree (what we call the Diploma)
  •  need to bridge the gap between previous study and undergraduate / postgraduate level study
  • are keen to study at an institute that offers small-group teaching and closer individual academic and social/welfare attention and supervision.  All this has led to us having with an enviable track record of satisfaction ratings from our current and past students
  • are returning to their studies and need a bridging programme to help maximise their potential
  •  want to maximise their potential in a quality Higher Education environment at a lower costs and in a fast track method

Unlike many others we can evidence what we say!

These gold standard student services are reflected in the results of the 2006 i-Graduate survey. This recent independent survey of 38 UK HE institutions undertaken by i-Graduate, which included a number of prestigious UK Universities including Cambridge, Nottingham, Durham, Edinburgh and Manchester, resulted in LIBT being ranked joint 3rd for overall study experience.

The i-Graduate survey also highlighted a number of specific areas where our students were extremely satisfied with their LIBT experience.

In relation to the academic side of their experience:

  • 89% of students were satisfied that they were being taught by expert lecturers
  • 85% of students were impressed by the library facilities and by the learning spaces made available to them their during their studies
  •  83% of students were satisfied that the LIBT course content was of a high quality and would prepare them well for their studies at Brunel

In relation to pastoral care and student support, 86% of LIBT were satisfied about safety and security during their time at LIBT.

Finally with almost 75% of our students stating that they had either actively encouraged or would encourage their friends and fellow international students to study at LIBT, the LIBT pathway is the students' preferred pathway to a degree from the prestigious Brunel University.

Our students’ satisfaction can be backed up by the academic results that they have achieved. The first cohort of LIBT Diploma of Business and Management students completed their studies at Brunel University in July 2006. Of the 52 LIBT graduates who entered the 2nd year of their Business and Management programmes at Brunel in September 2004, 22 gained upper second class (2.1) degrees and 24 gained lower second class degrees (2.2).  This is a fantastic result and we are very proud of all of our graduates!

The success of LIBT's students has also been confirmed by a recent study, which compared the performance of LIBT students against international students who had gained direct entry to Brunel University Year 1 with higher academic and English Language qualifications. The research found that LIBT students perform at the same academic level as Brunel students.

University Level – Diploma (Yr 1 BSc Hons) commencing January, May and September

We offer Diploma courses in the following subjects:

  • Business & Management
  • Information Systems & Computing
  • Economics and Finance

These courses are offered in association with Brunel University and comprise the first year units of the relevant Brunel University undergraduate degree. As the Diplomas are based on the Brunel University first year modules they are subject to the same stringent UK teaching quality assessments as any other UK degree programme. This means that we have multi-layer accreditation and quality assessment indicators.

On successful completion of a Diploma and subject to meeting Brunel University academic progression criteria, students are eligible for transfer to the 2nd year of the relevant Brunel University BSc Honours degree. As we teach a twp semester Diploma programme this allows a fast track and intensive study option allowing student to complete their studies quicker then is normal (this mainly applies to the Jan start programmes).

Students who complete a Diploma are also eligible to seek advanced standing to relevant degree programs at alternative British universities if they so choose.
